What is hypnosis?
‘Hypnosis’ comes from the Greek word ‘Hypnos’ which means sleep, although the actual state of hypnosis is very different from sleep.
Nowadays, hypnosis is defined as in an hypnotic and tranced state in the mind. Does the hypnotic state sounds mysterious? From TV programs, movies, and commercials, people refer to hypnosis as some sort of mind control. Little does people know, in fact, everyone experiences the hypnotic state in everyday life but just without one’s knowing. Under the hypnotic state, one appears to be in a relaxed state or even daydreaming-like, but at the same time, they are highly concentrated. Can you think of when in a day would you appear like this…? Usually, people would experience hypnotic or trance state when a person gradually drifts into sleep or when you are just about to wake up, but not totally awake yet.
For example, when you are driving on a very long and straight road, sometimes you feel like you can start daydreaming - that’s when you are in an hypnotic state; when you are so concentrated reading a book that you cannot even hear another person calling your name - that’s when you are in an hypnotic state; when you are so focused watching your favorite TV program that you become less aware of what is happening to you and even start nodding off but you can still hear what is being said - you are even in a deeper level of the hypnotic state.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapists use hypnosis as a tool to help people to CHANGE! According to Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, which is widely accepted by hypnotherapists, there are three levels of mind: the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind. The conscious mind is the most active when we are awake, intaking information through our five senses and transferring them to the subconscious mind to process and store. It also communicates with the outside world through speech, physical movement, and thoughts.
The subconscious mind drives our autonomic actions and reactions such as body functions, feelings, emotions, and motives under such behavior. The subconscious mind also works like an iCloud with unlimited space to store our data, our memories, everything that we experienced in the past and things that we learn now. Therefore, the subconscious mind actually provides all the resources that the conscious mind need and use. To make a change, it is always more effective to look at and to deal directly with the source: the subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool to help people to change because under the hypnotic state, the subconscious mind is relatively more active and more responsive to suggestions. By communicating with the subconscious mind, it guides an individual to change positively and provide ways to achieve its goal. Just like reprogramming the subconscious mind, once the autonomic sensor’s program has been changed, the unwanted behaviors and habits will be changed afterwards.
